A domain portfolio strategy for a family of brands

A family of products needs a deliberate naming strategy

Once a company ships more than one product, domains stop being an afterthought and become a strategy. Which names do you own, how do the product brands relate to the parent, what redirects to what, and which top level domains do you defend. Decided deliberately, the portfolio reinforces the brand. Left to accrete, it becomes a confusing sprawl that dilutes it.

Umbrella and product brands

There are two patterns and most portfolios use both. The umbrella pattern keeps everything under the parent domain as subdomains, which concentrates authority and signals that the products belong together. The independent brand pattern gives a product its own domain, which lets it stand on its own and build its own identity. The choice per product is a judgment about whether it is a feature of the whole or a business in its own right.

Defend the obvious variants

For any brand you care about, own the close variants and the common alternate top level domains, and redirect them to the canonical home. This is cheap insurance against typosquatting and against a competitor or squatter parking on a name your customers will guess. The redirect also means a customer who types the wrong extension still lands in the right place.

Make redirects deliberate and permanent

When several domains point at one product, pick one canonical address and send the rest there with permanent redirects. This keeps search authority consolidated on a single home instead of split across duplicates, and it gives users and crawlers one answer to "where does this brand actually live". On this platform the alternate extensions redirect to the canonical domain for exactly this reason.

Govern it like infrastructure

A portfolio is only coherent if it is managed coherently. Hold the names with a registrar that offers programmatic DNS (see the programmatic DNS guide), keep the intended configuration in code, and review the portfolio periodically: what is live, what is redirecting, what is expiring. A domain that lapses by accident is a brand a stranger can take. Treating the portfolio as governed infrastructure, rather than a pile of annual renewals, is what keeps the company's web presence authoritative as the family of products grows.
